Troncones is renowned for so many wonderful features– and as a beautiful beach resort, you’ll have the time of your life here with us at Raqueros. But in addition to all the things you have come to know us for (surfing, bird watching, and beach weddings in Mexico come to mind), you can add one more thing to the list: helping to restore the Pacific Ocean sea turtle population by releasing baby turtles into the wild. There’s not much more amazing and sweet than holding an hours-old tiny turtle in your hand, and then sending it off towards the ocean with all the good wishes you can muster.

Our guests at Raqueros have a front-row seat for witnessing this miracle firsthand, and participating in the nightly release of baby turtes– and if you’re really lucky, you might even see a female turtle laying her eggs in the sand at night right in front of Raqueros!

Sea turtles have been listed as an endangered species by the World Conservation Union for many years; due mostly to the collection of eggs for human consumption along much of the Mexican coastline, it’s estimated that up to 35,000 sea turtles are killed each year. But heroic programs such as the one in Troncones are helping to restore the population, as well as adding the critical step of educating kids and adults alike about the importance of protecting–not eating– these majestic sea creatures.

The turtle preservation program was begun by Juan Carlos, a young Troncones native. At night, female turtles climb onto the beach to lay their eggs, and a team of volunteers carefully uncovers the eggs and transports them to a safe area in front of Robert’s Bistro, which has been converted into a hatchery. The eggs are protected here, and two months later the babies break free of their shells and are collected into a basin, which is then brought to the waters’ edge nearly every evening. This is when locals and tourists alike are welcomed to release the tiny turtles back into the ocean, sending them on their way with prayers for a long and happy turtle life.

It’s estimated that only 10% of the baby turtles will make it to adulthood, due to natural predators and environmental threats, which makes it all the more important for conservation programs to release such great numbers back into the wild.

There is no charge for helping to release the turtles, but donations are gratefully accepted towards this wonderful program, which helps to release up to 15,000 turtles every year back into the Pacific Ocean. Make sure to return for another vacation in about 30 years, when many of these same babies will return to lay their eggs on the very beach where they were released!

Sometimes dreams really do come true– and if you dream of a beach wedding in Mexico, with the sun setting behind you as you exchange your vows and gentle ocean waves providing the music, we’re at your service!

The truth is, we absolutely love planning and hosting beach weddings in Mexico, at our beachfront getaway Posada de los Raqueros. As destination weddings in Mexico have become more popular we’ve been making magic happen for countless couples, and every time we’re struck anew by Cupid’s arrow… we can’t help it, we’re incurable romantics!

Every part of a wedding here with us, on the beach on the Pacific Coast of Mexico in Troncones, is custom-tailored to your wishes. Weddings at Raqueros can accommodate up to 150 guests, and we specialize in smaller, intimate affairs too.

We can arrange for your ceremony to be held at the waters edge, on the grass in the garden, or on the veranda of the main house. Do you envision an abundance of tropical flowers decorating the posada, or perhaps festive traditional Mexican papel picado fluttering overhead in the breeze… or both? Our wedding parties have danced to top-notch DJs and live latin groups, and of course, no wedding is complete without serenades by a mariachi band– all of which we’ll arrange according to your wishes.

When it’s time to plan your menu, we’re pros at designing a custom-menu you’ll be delighted with. We partner with Jean Pascal Bochet, of Troncones Catering, to provide a sumptuous meal your guests will rave about for years to come– have a look at some sample menus and we’ll bet your appetite is piqued! Your wedding cake is given the same care and attention: our bakers handcraft exquisite wedding cakes with the flavors and design you desire, so you’re sure to start your married life on a sweet, delicious note.

We can also arrange the little details you’ll need for your big day: hair, makeup and nails by local spa professionals, pre-wedding massages for the wedding party, activities for your guests (anyone up for some world class surfing?), photographers and videographers to capture the special moments, and more.

The view from your yoga class

But, let’s be honest: there are times we could really use a change of scene. No matter how much we love those studios, who doesn’t dream of doing yoga in Mexico? Talk about inspiring: sun salutations with the sun! Down dogs with the sweet dogs staring out at the ocean. Tree pose while listening to the palms gently sway, and child’s pose while listening to the waves unfold themselves onto the sand.

Yogis and teachers, we welcome you to Raqueros, where you can reconnect deeply with your practice and yourself. Whether you’re a single yogi or a teacher leading a retreat, we’ve got what you need. Yoga retreats in Mexico are memories that last a lifetime, and we love making those dreams come true!

For yogis looking for a beach retreat, the beauty of Raqueros is the ample space to roll out your mat steps from the ocean. If you’re staying in one of our bungalows, your private patio area is the perfect spot for morning and evening practice (with ample hammock-napping in between). Our suites open out right on the large tiled veranda; with a direct view of the Pacific Ocean, you can dive deeply into your asanas before diving right into the waves. We’ve also got the direct connection to the best teachers in town, for one-on-one private classes in the sanctuary of Raqueros.

If you’re a teacher leading yoga retreats in Mexico, let us help you plan your next dream retreat. Your group can reserve the entire Posada for a private experience, and you can lead classes on the large covered veranda overlooking the ocean. After sessions end, make your way over to the communal dining table where fresh juice, local fruits, and other homemade healthy and delicious treats will be waiting! We’re happy to work with you to arrange the yoga retreat you’ve always dreamed of leading; if you can imagine it, we can make it happen.

And the best part is, we’re perfectly situated for a whole host of other fantastic activities and have got all the connections you need: surfing lessons & rentals for a surf/yoga retreat, horseback riding on the beach or jungle, hiking, kayaking, dolphin cruises, and bird watching. We can arrange for top of the line spa services right at Raqueros, so that you and your group can have luxurious massages and pedicures without moving an inch; we bring the spa right to you.

Sri Pattabhi Jois said, “Practice, and all is coming.“ Posada de los Raqueros says, “Practice on a yoga retreat in Mexico, and all is coming… with sand between your toes and a pina colada in your hand!”

It’s possible that just about everyone on the planet harbors secret surfer dreams, and Mexico plays a big role in those fantasies. Can’t you just imagine waking up beachside every morning, tossing on a suit, grabbing your board and getting in a warm-water surf session while the sun rises? Add in end-of-day sunsets, cold cervezas, fish tacos, and the sweet slumber that comes after a day of paddling and riding the perfect waves… and I think we’ve all just fulfilled a life goal.

It’s no secret that the Mexican coastline is full of mindblowing surf spots– some well-known, and others which the locals will never breathe word of to an outsider. So that means insider info like this: Surf Troncones, for the trip of a lifetime.

Of course, a handful of Mexican waves get nearly all the publicity– the “Mexican Pipeline” is intense and hardcore– but when you surf Troncones & the beaches nearby, you’ll find nearly crowd-free breaks, spots for everyone from beginner to advanced, and that surf lifestyle you see in your dreams.

Posada de los Raqueros is positioned steps from the main point break here in Troncones beach, on Manzanillo Bay. From most rooms you can see the ocean, and then head out and sit in a beach chair, feet in the sand, while drinking your morning coffee and watching the waves curl… then strap on your leash and go. Get in touch with us with any surfing-related questions you have — what are the best spots, times of year, where to rent surfboards or boogie boards, the best instructors and lessons, what kind of beer goes best with an epic left– and we’ll get you all the answers you need. We can handle any special requests you’ve got: arranging lessons and day trips, getting your sessions photographed, and cooking up a post-surf feast on the beach for your group!

And, to get your appetite going, we’re proud to post photos from the local Surf Photo King, Armando Ortega (aka Wax), a local surfer and professional surf photographer. Scroll down for a taste of what you’ll find right here in front of Raqueros, on the rest of Playa Troncones, and at other spots nearby.

If you’re a bird-watcher– or if you’ve ever met a birder– you understand that they are a dedicated and hardy species, with a migration pattern marked by early-morning hikes and distinguishable by the binoculars hanging around their necks. They travel with lists in hand, ready to sit patiently and calmly, hoping their beautiful feathered friends decide to fly in for a visit.

Troncones is a paradise for birdwatchers; one source lists over 100 species of birds observed in Troncones itself, and more than 320 species cataloged in the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area overall (of which Troncones Beach is a part).

Posada de los Raqueros was thrilled to recently host members from the Audubon group from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and everyone had a blast! Days were spent walking the beaches, estuaries, and overgrown “jungle” areas; the group returned for sunsets on the beach (cold cervezas in hand) and shared memorable meals together.

Of course, the non-birders in the group had a lot to occupy themselves with, too: snorkling & surfing, fishing, horseback riding, boogie boarding… and everyone seemed to really enjoy snoozing in the hammocks!

We’re happy to share with you a report from one of the group’s members, Brad Waggoner, to give you a taste of what bird watchers can find in our diverse natural habitat here in Troncones beach:

Troncones, Mexico: Bird Watching (Birding) Report
by Brad Waggoner

The beaches and waters near our Troncones Hotel, Posada de los Raqueros, provided a multitude of birds for viewing enjoyment. One need not venture out of his chair under the umbrellas to enjoy the many foraging and diving Brown Pelicans along with Brown Boobies. Occasionally things such as Yellow-crowned Night-Herons and Whimbrels (a large shorebird with a down curved bill) would leisurely walk past on the beach. The rocky shores of the nearby point also provided waders and other shorebirds. This one picture show three species of herons (waders) in one small space including from left to right – Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, and Snowy Egret. Shorebirds on the rocks included Wandering Tattler, Whimbrel, and Willet, seen here in flight with their bold black and white wing pattern. A walk of about 4 kilometers northward to a small estuary on Troncones Beach on one morning added many other waterbirds including this Northern Jacana and these three Roseate Spoonbills.

The nearby Thorn Forest habitat of Posada de los Raqueros provided me with countless hours of wonderful birding. Many life birds or birds new to my Mexico list were encountered during these bird walks. Amongst my favorites included a Collared Forest-Falcon, two Yellow-headed Parrots (a scarce bird!), Pale-billed Woodpecker (pictured here), several Golden Vireos, and a lovely male Spot-breasted Oriole. But there were many, many other birds than “life-birds” to provide viewing satisfaction to this hard-core birder. White-throated Magpie-Jays (pictured here) were abundant and a bit vocal at times. A few times I had nice looks at the quite large, long-tailed, bright rufous colored Squirrel Cuckoo (pictured here). Several times I encountered Blue Buntings like this beautiful male. Although most viewings were of the all cinnamon-brown female. One of the most colorful birds, and actually quite common in the area, were the Orange-breasted Bunting (pictured here). They would even occasionally visit the grounds of Posada de los Raqueros.

The Waggoner’s also spent a magical six days at the Brouwer’s Zihuatanejo condo unit tucked on the hillside overlooking Playa la Ropa and the lovely bay and city to the north. As with our stay at Posada de los Raqueros, this birder was in a dream spot to satisfy the obsession. The spacious patio provided not only the great view but also bird-watching from the comforts of a chair. The intact surrounding hillside Thorn Forest vegetation (see picture) meant birds still had the habitat to be very close by. Just before dawn on one morning the barking-like hoots of a Mottled Owl was heard and most early mornings provided the repetitious toots of a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (see picture). Birds were especially fond of trees and vegetation near the pool and things like Citreoline Trogan, Social Flycatcher, Rufous-backed Thrush, Painted Bunting and Streaked-backed Oriole were common visitors. Hummingbirds were also in the area and frequented a lower unit patio with a hummingbird feeder. Hey, how about placing one at your unit, Hans! Large Cinnamon Hummingbirds (see picture) and the beautiful Doubleday’s Hummingbird (see picture) were common. The skies above the condo also provided soaring Magnificent Frigatebirds, Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures, but also White-collared Swifts, the occasional Short-tailed Hawk or Zone-tailed Hawk and a few things like overhead Roseate Spoonbills and Wood Storks.

To the east of the Zihua Condo, a nicely paved road provided several great mornings of bird exploring. Perhaps this gated road will provide future housing, but for now, it gave me, along with morning walkers a place to wonder away from the traffic and up into the surrounding hillside. Several new life birds were encountered on these walks including Common Pauraque, Russet-crowned Motmot (see picture), Greenish Elaenia, Flammulated Flycatcher, Masked Tityra, Orange-billed Nightengale-Thrush, Red-breasted Chat and Black-vented Oriole. Also such interesting things such as this Common Pauraque and Colima Pygmy-Owl were satisfying finds on these walks. With snow and cold currently gripping the Puget Sound Basin here in Washington state, I’m wishing I was still amongst the birds in the warm sunshine of Zihuatanejo.

Family, friends, cranberries & stuffing, football, sleighbells, and cookies for Santa: these are the things Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are made of. And tradition is tradition, even when it’s transported to our magical Troncones beach (or, “Playa Troncones”), on Manzanillo Bay, Mexico!

It’s true: we absolutely adore sharing these holidays with our guests. We’ve had entire extended families come down together, and couples too. And over the years, we’ve perfected the art of Thanksgiving and the magic of Christmas celebrated in the sun and surf of Mexico.

Curious about the details?

For Thanksgiving & Christmas, we dig in and host big parties at Jardin del Eden (a quick, sandy stroll up the beach). We go all-out traditional: for example, our Thanksgiving menu includes wood oven turkey, a surf & turf menu, and homemade tropical pineapple-apple sauce, traditional stuffing, and cranberry on the side. Eat, eat, eat, and then it’s time for dessert, including Jean Pascal’s famous chocolate hazelnut cake served with locally-made ice cream. There may even be a piñata for the kids!

Or, your group might prefer a custom-catered meal right at our Troncones hotel, Posada de los Raqueros… we’re happy to oblige! Our family-sized table on the veranda seats up to 16 people, and we’ll work with you to create a menu and desserts you’ll dream about for years to come.

Contact us today for special Thanksgiving & Christmas pricing on rooms & casitas at Posada de los Raqueros, and a surprise treat for your holiday dinner at Jardin del Eden! Be sure to reserve your rooms & table early, as our holiday reservations go fast…

We’re happy to help you plan the details of your beach holidays this season; just get in touch with your questions, and we’ll provide answers. So let the family know about the change in plans this year– which we guarantee you’ll become a legendary hero for– pack your bags, and we’ll see you soon!
It can be harder still to get a real feel for a place from the website text itself– after all, even the Hotel California could sound good if they’d just hire a top-notch PR firm.

So, we could keep talking ourselves up, because we here at Raqueros know that we offer our guests a sweet spot in paradise on Playa Manzanillo in Troncones, and that your stay here will leave you feeling absolutely renewed. And we could follow the old adage “Show don’t tell” and keep posting mindblowingly-beautiful photos on our Facebook page and website, so that you can lose yourself in the mesmerizing sunsets and practically feel the light breeze and hear the swaying palm trees above.

(while we’re on the subject, have you seen the photos of our casitas, bungalows, and rooms? Heaven…)

However! Perhaps the best way to let you know about the Raqueros experience is for us to step away from the microphone and let our guests tell you about their own experience here. We know that TripAdvisor.com is the go-to site for honest reviews of lodging all around the world, and we’re immensely proud to be the #2 rated lodging in Troncones Beach. And, check this out: we recently received a TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence” for being rated as a 5-star lodging by our guests! We’re happy that we’re making our guests happy.

But don’t take our word for it– we’re going to get out of the way, and let you read for yourselves what our guests have said about us on TripAdvisor. Here’s a sampling of our 81 sparkling reviews:

The rooms were clean and comfortable, the grounds immaculate, and the beach/bay truly a piece of paradise! We enjoyed the gorgeous sunsets on the beach every night.

We just returned from our seventh visit to Los Raqueros…it must be great to warrant seven consecutive visits. We have celebrated the winter holidays at Los Raqueros because of its welcoming atmosphere, the lovely grounds, the attentive and caring help from the hosts, and the jewel-like setting of Manzanillo Bay. A week at Los Raqueros has typically included a lot of time on the beach reading, sea kayaking and hiking with a local eco-tourism expert, fishing from a panga with a local fisherman from the adjoining fishing village, and good conversation with a small number of guests who quickly settle into a dreamlike state! You can easily get to Zihuatanejo for events or shopping, but we’ve found it easy to get everything we need in the local village of Troncones…a 20-minute walk from Los Raqueros.

By the way, we’ve enjoyed this place so much, we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary here! Next year seems far away, but it’ll get here soon enough! We’ll be back!

This was our second visit to La Posada de Los Raqueros and we had another spectacular time! The location right on a beautiful sandy beach, comfortable and colorful rooms, and relaxing, informal atmosphere make this a perfect destination for anyone who wants to get away from the crowds and busy tourist resorts. Troncones is located on a dirt road on beautiful Manzanillo Bay, with some great outdoor restaurants and local music. The owners, Hans and Angie, are wonderful hosts; they will take care of your every need, find you local tours (e.g., kayaking, hiking), arrange taxis, and make restaurant reservations. I highly recommend this spot of paradise. We can’t wait to return!

Here we are again writing a glowing review of ‘La Posada de Los Raqueros’. We had yet another, wonderful, great time with Hans and Angie last year. They always make us feel like family, that’s why we keep coming back year after year! We just love this place. What a great getaway spot. Don’t expect a TV or a Radio or a daily Newspaper, it’s not going to happen. Why? Because this is a vacation, that’s why! We like being able to walk down the beach into the town of Troncones, or if one prefers, there is a random shuttle\van that runs up and down the road to Troncones. We actually took the van to the main highway (200) and waited for the public bus into Zihuatenejo. We spent the day shopping in Z, had lunch and caught the bus back to the bus stop for Troncones. The van was soon to arrive, and back to Raqueros with a load of groceries and tons of stories to tell!
Well here we are in the middle of July thinking about our trip this year back to La Posada de Los Raqueros. It’s gonna be a looooooonnnggggg 4 months!!!!

I just returned from the wedding of my daughter at La Posada de los Raqueros. What a perfect destination for a wedding. The location, with the roaring ocean out our front door, was gorgeous and our rooms were beautiful. The little village of Troncones was delightful with some outstanding outdoor restaurants. I felt Hans and Angie were very generous and welcoming to all the guests What wonderful people they are!. It was truly a special time for all.
I just returned from spending close to three weeks at La Posada de los Raqueros. This was my fifth visit. Aside from simply vacationing and relaxing in a beautiful place, this time we also decided to invite all of our friends along to celebrate our wedding here. Raqueros served as the ideal location and we couldn’t have been happier with the entire experience. We were able to house many of our guests onsite, and the layout of the property lent itself to three (uniquely different) days of gorgeous celebration. It was a very memorable and magical experience for us, and for all of our guests. Thanks to Hans and Angie, and the top-notch Raqueros staff, for all that they did to make our stay and wedding day so perfect.

I just returned from an incredible week in Troncones and owe a great deal of my restored tranquility to Hans and Angie, owners of La Posada de los Raqueros. We were there for a wedding and were fortunate enough to be able to stay for seven days and now I can only think about how soon I can get back.

Troncones is a charming, rustic and soulful beach town that attracts world class surfers and anyone looking to disappear from their busy lives to the cradle of the Pacific shore. There are many homes and 8-10 room hotels to rent along the 3 mile beach, but after exploring many of them, I must say that Posada de los Raqueros has a bit of magic that can’t be found anywhere else. There’s a vibe, a spirit and balance at Raqueros that is the result of Hans’ and Angie’s special touch and care.

Look no further than Posada de los Raqueros if Troncones is your destination. Stay as long as you can and leave all of your troubles behind.

What distinguishes this place from thousands of other nice places in the beaches of Mexico? Like a fine liqueur, this place perfectly combines all the necessary ingredients to make your stay there simply unforgettable: an incredibly beautiful and safe natural location; comfortable, spacious, fresh and cozily decorated rooms and facilities; friendly, respectful and always helpful staff; and –indeed its most valuable asset- a wonderful, kind and warm host couple: Angie and Hans.
In other words: there are many brands of good liqueurs, but only very few of them can be proud of having reached a “perfect blend”. There can be no doubt that “Posada de los Raqueros” falls under this last category.
Thank you, Angie and Hans. We very much look forward to visiting you again soon.

We just returned from one of our most satisfying and relaxing vacations we’ve spent in years. This was our 2nd year in Troncones, but our 1st time with Hans and Angie at their Posada. It is elegant rusticity–a beautiful tropical hacienda with everythign we were looking for. We had a beautiful muraled bedroom which looked out on Manzanillo Bay and opened onto a tiled patio with a loveseat and hammock facing the beach. Mornings began with a European-style continental breakfast–yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, coffee. Days were spent reading on the beach. Manzanillo Bay is a tranquil inlet around the corner from the long strtch of Troncones beach, and is great for body surfing, boogie boarding, and even snorkeling–which I did endlessly. The Posada has snorkel gear and boogie boards. Every evening Hans and Angie would host a sunset gathering on the beach, as guests relaxed and watched an infinite variety of gorgeous sunsets (and waited for the mythical green flash). It was easy and fun to socialize with the guests from Europe and North America. There are three restaurants you can walk down the beach and reach–including the very affordable Tronco Bay Inn (order the chile relleno or fantastic coconut shrimp). Nearly every night some restaurant had a special–special dinner or special entertainment. You can catch the community bus for 10 pesos and go into Troncones for lunch or dinner–or call a cab for 50 pesos. The village of Troncones is charming and sleepy–you can walk along the beach and reach it in 30 minutes. The ocean breezes seemed to keep the warm temperatures from ever getting too sizzling, and the sound fo the surf was tranquillizing. One evening we witnessed a nearby turtle release–as new turtle hatchlings dashed under cover of sunset to the safety of the ocean. Throughout the day Angie and Hans played hospitable hosts, responding amiably to our questions and requests–even letting us hitch a ride into Zihuatenejo one day to visit the local market and waterfront. There were many beautiful tocuhes to this little paradise–colorful Mexican murals, flowerpetals on the bed and new towel-origami arrangements each day, wireless internet access, many gracious spaces–hammocks, sofas, settees, tables–to sit or work or read or relax. I had a weird experience one morning–I stepped on a sting ray while snorkeling and was badly stung. The guests all collaborated on treating my wound–the treatment is soaking in hot water; everyone was very hospitable–Hans even gave me several anaesthetizing shots of Tequila. We were well cared for. There are many little adventures a couple can find–walk into Troncones, birdwatch, visit the fishing village of Mahajua. Alex at nearby Hacienda Eden leads kayak tours in the lagoon and hikes in the nearby hill country. A wonderful winter retreat to paradise. We are already planning our return.

Different pathways through the landscape allow visitors and hosts to move to and from the beach discreetly
A continental style breakfast is provided with excellent coffee, fruit and granola. Angie and Hans have a friendly old refrigerator “Pancho”, who dispenses ice cold refreshments to guests on an honor system. There is a large tiled kitchen, fully equipped, if you want to prepare your own meals.

The beach is sublime, with luxurious waves for good swimming, surfing and boogie boarding. The water is crystal clear, at times, you can see the fish go by. In the evening we accompanied baby turtles in their pilgrimage into the sea. Manzanillo Bay is an exclusive area, muy tranquilo in stark contrast to the beaches of Zihautanejo. Not a lot of people on this beach the three times I’ve been here. Los Raqueros provides a very set of umbrellas, padded lounges and canvas sling chairs on their beach frontage.
La Posada de los Raqueros provided us with the truly relaxing vacation that we were looking for in a setting that can only be described as stunning. From the sunsets and tidal pools to the pounding surf as you sleep, Raqueros gave us the that profound beachfront setting we were seeking. Located on Manzanillo Bay just outside of the town of Troncones, this place gives you the feeling of escape, but with comforts. Our room in the main lodge was spacious and charmingly decorated. We often spent siestas lounging on the terrace, while still in view of the beach. The senoritas created different floral artistry on our bed and towels each day.

The beach here is is open ocean, known to surfers, but swimmable with some caution. Watching the surfers was a great pasttime. Hans and Angie are gracious hosts who provide you with local tips, great conversation, and host sunset happy hours. A highlight for us was witnessing the release of sea turtles, (little green ridleys), on both our first night and our last night. (That must be an auspicious sign!)

Troncones itself has enough of everything you need including beachfront bars and restaurants, a modern liquor store in a new little mini-mall, little shops, and even yoga. However, our favorite restaurant quickly became Hotel Eden, just next door to Raqueros, particularly the tuna in its many variations.

It’s easy to catch the combi/bus to either Zihuatanejo or Ixtapa if you need a taste of the city, but you’ll be glad to return to your seaside garden of Raqueros at the end of the day.

For me the surfer this was 18 days in Paradise. Surfing everyday. I have stayed in various location in Troncones and this was my first stay at Raqueros. The place mimics the character of your hosts Hans and Angie who welcome you to Raqueros as if you were old friends. The staff that Hans and Angie employ quietly go about their duties in an unobtrusive manner and anticipate youe needs. We plan to visit again in 2011.

We simply loved posada Los Raqueros, a wonderful, quiet place, decorated with much taste in « mexican » colors! Its owners, Hans and Angie did everything to make us feel “at home” and to find our way around. Also we had most interesting talks with the other guests. On our long walks along the beautiful beaches of Manzanillo and Majahua ( lots of pelicans, exotic fish, even baby turtles!) we had the privilege to be accompanied by “Tuffi”, our hosts’ affectionate, funny dog! Back home, we enjoyed the wonderful sunsets, right in front of “Los Raqueros”.
This definitely is a place to enjoy, away from the roaring crowd!

Great spot away from the madding crowd. Beautiful beach location with trees and flowers throughout the courtyard make for a great setting for a relaxing time at the Posada. Easy to get to from Zihuatanejo by cab or rental car 40 minutes north of the airport.

The owners are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Hans and Angie will ensure your stay is a memorable one.

Activities in the area include snorkeling, boogie boards and surfing. Don’t miss a chance to go kayaking and bird watching with Alejandro. And of course the sunsets are fantastic if not the best anywhere.

The units with kitchenettes are great for easy preparation of fresh food which can be had in Troncones 3 km away or from local fisherman. You can also load up on a few staples in Zihua on the way to Troncones. Several restaurants are nearby and Marthas in Majahua Bay should not be missed. It is a short walk of approx. 1.5 km North of the Posada along the beach or the road.

If you are there on a Sunday book a table at the Burro Burracho for an evening of some Mexican traditional dancing and singing. The performers are amateurs but put on a very entertaining show. The break-dancers give a 100% effort and are amazing to watch. Get a front row seat.

Bring your swimsuit and sunblock and enjoy the margaritas!

No story about Raqueros would be complete without an anecdote or two about Tuffy, the world’s wisest dog.

Pronounced Toofie (think of a toothless child trying to say “toothie”), legend has it that he was named by a local Troncones resident who, on seeing him as a young, spritely dog, said “el perro de los dibujos animados”. Translated: the dog in the cartoons. Translated again: the Disney character Goofy.

Now, one would have to know Tuffy well to realize that this characterization was not appreciated by our resident canine. Nevertheless, the name stuck… probably because he did bear a striking resemblance (sans the dumb countenance) to the celebrity dog of similar nomenclature. Lanky, almost gangly, with droopy ears and a casual, carefree but purposeful gait, Tuffy loped up and down the beach on a daily basis during his requisite butt-sniffing, dead-fish-seeking, horse-chasing meditation.

It takes a human years– possibly lifetimes– to come to the level of enlightenment that allows him or her to be simultaneously above it all while still being a commoner, able to follow and thoroughly execute commands issued by a select few, and relate to the mere mortals that coexist in his or her space. Tuffy was born that way.

Tuffy was the only trilingual dog I’ve ever met. You could ask Tuffy to do certain things (most people would say ‘you could command Tuffy to do certain things’, but Tuffy was far above any kind of pedestrian commands) in several different languages and Tuffy would quietly abide. For example, you could say “Tuffy, go check it out” in Dutch, Spanish or English and he would jump up from what previously appeared to be a drunken coma, utter a low, gutteral “woof” and then proceed to walk the perimeter of the property at Raqueros, making sure there was nothing out-of-line occurring. Occasionally he’d find something– like maybe a possum or a burro — which he would dispose of without too much of a ruckus. Then he’d report back to Hans and stare silently and deeply into his eyes, telepathically communicating that “everything’s cool man, can I go back to chasing tail in my dreams?”

A simple nod would send Tuffy back to his usual state of repose on the veranda tile.

Now, I am generally more of a cat person than a dog person. But some have said that Tuffy was actually not a dog, but some kind of Diety who had chosen to revisit Earth on his own terms: he wanted to be on a beach where there were no fences, no leash laws, lots of horses and burros, and plenty of friendly people to scratch his ass for him. This way he could check in on his Earthly inferiors and make sure they were getting by and coexisting in peace, while not having to exert himself too much. So he chose to come to Dog Heaven (aka Manzanillo Bay) and visit his Doggy and human brethren, who also found themselves blessed enough to live and visit Dog Heaven.

Tuffy used to like to watch me surf. He knew that I was likely to get up a couple of hours before Hans, so I’d often find him wagging his tail on the Pelicano patio at sunrise, eagerly awaiting me to stagger out for my morning surf. Knowing I’d likely be moving slow from the tequila imbibed the night before, he never jumped up and down or barked or did anything that would hurt my delicate head. Just wagged. Then he’d open the gate for me, so I wouldn’t ding my board when I walked through, and would walk me to the water’s edge, where he’d sit quietly, staring at the ocean while I stretched. No jumping up and down, no licking, no bullshit. Just watching the horizon, looking for sneaker sets, ocean critters, anything that might make me uncomfortable. When I stood up to strap on my leash, he’d quietly nod at me, giving me the “all clear”. Then he’d sit and watch until I hit the lineup before turning and ambling over to Eden to sniff Estrella’s butt hello.

Being a Diety, Tuffy wasn’t afraid of much. The only time Tuffy ever showed fear was during thunder storms. We never figured out why this was– probably some bad memory from a past life before he was a diety. I can say this now that he’s gone (he never would have tolerated me talking about this in his presence), but more than once at Raqueros I woke up, having sensed a presence in my room, and rolled out of bed to step on a quivering, wimpering, wet dog. Thunder storms were the only time he would exercise his power to open doors (he probably could have picked the lock too, but I’ve never locked a door at Raqueros). I still, to this day, don’t know how he figured out to open my room’s door and get in, having never noticed opposable thumbs on him. I guess, in retrospect, I don’t really need to wonder how he got in: Deities have their means, I suppose.

Last year, 2010, Tuffy decided that it was time for him to go hang out with his other friends, Ghandhi, Martin Luther King, Mozart, Bach, Bob Marley and others in their class. He reluctantly passed his throne on to Chamu- a somewhat reluctant but not stupid upstart- and left us to our own devices. He will be sorely missed but forever remembered.
